Maltesers, originally known as Energy Balls, were invented by Forrest Sr. in 1936. The current name is a portmanteau of the words "malt" and "teasers". Despite the spelling, there is no connection with the nation of Malta or Maltese people. The mystery of how the chocolate covers the porous biscuit centre is a closely guarded secret.
